Start with the role, not the course September 21, 2026 Start with the role, responsibilities and what the learner needs to do with the knowledge.Author | Karen Greyling - Business Development Manager, Pragma I get asked this question quite often: *Should I do the Asset Management Masterclass, or would the Asset Management Awareness Training be enough?*It is a fair question, especially because the two options overlap in the asset management theory they cover. But when choosing asset management training, I normally start somewhere else. Instead of asking which course is “better” or more comprehensive, ask: What does this person need to do with the knowledge? That usually makes the decision much clearer. ## Start with the role when choosing asset management training The distinction is less about which programme contains “more” and more about the level of responsibility the learning needs to support. In simple terms: - Need to lead, integrate or implement asset management? **Choose the Masterclass.** - Need focused asset management knowledge relevant to your role? **Choose Awareness Training.** ## Choose the Masterclass when you need the whole picture The Asset Management Masterclass is designed primarily for senior managers and specialists responsible for defining, implementing, leading or improving asset management in their organisations. For these roles, understanding individual asset management concepts is not enough. You need to understand how performance, risk, reliability, cost, people, information and long-term asset planning fit together. That is why the Masterclass goes beyond theory. Delegates participate in facilitated discussions, peer learning, practical application and assessments. They also develop or refine an Asset Management Policy, implementation strategy and scorecard for their own organisation, supported by coaching and mentoring. The programme can also be a powerful way to align senior leaders around a shared asset management vision, creating greater agreement on policies, strategic priorities, the implementation approach and the improvement projects that need to be taken forward. This shared understanding helps leadership teams move beyond individual perspectives and work towards a more coordinated approach to asset management improvement. The value lies not only in understanding the individual concepts, but in being able to connect them, apply them and use them to support better organisational decision-making and implementation. ## Choose Awareness Training when the knowledge needs to fit the role Not everyone who contributes to good asset management needs to lead the entire asset management system. A maintenance planner may need stronger knowledge of Maintenance Work Management, Asset Information and Material Management. A reliability engineer may need to strengthen knowledge in a particular reliability or asset integrity area. Another person may need enough understanding of Risk Management or Lifecycle Value Realisation to make better-informed decisions. Asset Management Awareness Training is designed for this kind of focused learning. The short, self-paced elearning modules can be completed individually or grouped into curated courses, allowing the learning to be matched to the knowledge each role requires. They are particularly useful for onboarding, role transitions, refreshers and closing specific knowledge gaps. A planner, engineering manager and production supervisor may all influence asset performance, but they do not necessarily need the same depth or combination of knowledge. ## Responsibility matters more than seniority The Masterclass is aimed at senior managers and specialists, but that does not mean every senior person automatically needs it. Awareness Training also includes learning relevant to senior managers, technical directors, engineering managers and asset managers. The deciding factor is responsibility, not job title. A senior leader who needs enough understanding of a particular topic to make an informed decision may be well served by selected Awareness modules. Someone at the same organisational level who must develop asset management strategy, align stakeholders and lead implementation may need the broader Masterclass journey. The answer also does not have to be the same for everyone in the organisation. A leader may complete the Masterclass while planners, engineers or supervisors complete Awareness modules aligned to their own responsibilities. Ultimately, the right asset management training is the one that gives each person the knowledge, depth of understanding and practical application they need to perform their role more effectively. **Start with the role.
